How we verify charger compatibility

Recommending the wrong charger is the one thing this site must never do. This page explains exactly how we decide which charger fits a laptop, what evidence sits behind each recommendation, and where the limits of our confidence are. Our standard is simple: we never claim more certainty than our evidence supports.

Our evidence hierarchy

Every laptop in our database is matched to a charger using sources we rank by authority — strongest first. We record the sources behind each match and show them on the result under “How we verified this.”

  1. 1Manufacturer specifications & service manualsThe laptop maker's own published spec sheets (e.g. HP QuickSpecs, Lenovo PSREF), service and maintenance manuals, and official support documentation. Highest authority.
  2. 2Official OEM charger referencesThe manufacturer's own charger and replacement-part listings that name the correct adapter, wattage, and part numbers.
  3. 3Manufacturer community & storeOfficial brand community answers and store listings — useful corroboration at medium authority.
  4. 4Independent compatibility researchReputable third-party compatibility databases and retailer specifications. Used to corroborate the connector and wattage only — never as the sole basis for a “verified” claim.

How we make a recommendation

  1. 1Identify the exact modelWe match your search to a specific laptop model or series — not a best guess.
  2. 2Establish the requirementFrom the evidence above, we record the connector type and the wattage the laptop needs.
  3. 3Match the chargerWe select a charger from our catalogue with the correct connector and a wattage that meets or exceeds the requirement. A higher-wattage charger of the same connector is safe — a laptop only draws the power it needs.
  4. 4Record the evidenceEvery recommendation stores the sources we checked and the connector's exact specification (size, tip, pin), shown on each result under “How we verified this.”
  5. 5Hold the ambiguous onesIf a model shipped with more than one charger, we do not recommend one until you confirm yours with a photo of the label.

Confidence levels

Every result tells you how strong its evidence is — and our wording changes to match. We never call something “verified” unless a manufacturer source stands behind it.

Manufacturer-verified

Backed by at least one manufacturer source. We say “verified against manufacturer specifications.”

Compatibility data

The connector and wattage are established from independent compatibility research, without a manufacturer source on file yet. We say “compatible based on available compatibility data” and ask you to confirm your charging port before buying. We never label these “verified.”

Photo verification required

The model can take more than one charger. We recommend nothing until a photo of your label or charging port confirms the exact match.

Limitations

  • We are not the manufacturer. Before buying, always confirm the connector and the OUTPUT wattage printed on your existing adapter, or the label on your laptop's underside.
  • Sub-variants and regional models can differ. A single model number can cover several configurations, and specifications occasionally change mid-cycle.
  • We assess connector and wattage compatibility — the two things that decide whether a charger physically fits and can power your laptop — not every electrical edge case.
  • Where our evidence is weaker, we say so (see “Compatibility data” above) rather than overstating confidence.

Affiliate independence

  • Our recommendations are based only on compatibility evidence. Commission never influences which charger we recommend or how results are ranked.
  • We do not accept payment to feature, rank, or promote any charger or brand.
  • Some outbound links may be affiliate links — if you buy through them we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This is disclosed on the page and never changes the recommendation.
  • We only attach a buy link to a recommendation that is manufacturer-verified. Where our evidence is weaker, we withhold the link rather than monetise an unconfirmed match.

Corrections

Accuracy is the entire point of this site. If you believe a recommendation is wrong or out of date, please tell us — search your laptop model or browse our help & guides. You can also browse every laptop charger we cover.
